Gartner are a US based firm, founded in 1979. They are the world’s leading research and advisory company when it comes to information technology. They help their clients to make informed decisions about their IT needs.
One of the tools they use is the Magic Quadrant – this is Gartner’s brand name for their series of market research reports. The Magic Quadrant provides subjective analysis into the market and its direction, how it is likely to mature and its participants. This tool gives potential customers and investors a wide angle view of the relative positions of the market’s competitors. It shows how well they are performing against one another.
Participants are rated on “completeness of vision” and “ability to execute”. The four quadrants are:
Leader – leaders score highly on both of these criteria. They are generally larger, more mature businesses who execute well and are well prepared for the future.
Visionaries – these are typically smaller companies who score lower on their ability to execute, but high on their completeness of vision.
Niche players – these businesses are generally new to Gartner’s Magic Quadrant and score low on both criteria. They typically focus on a small segment of the market but don’t out-innovate or out-perform others.
Challengers – score highly on their ability to execute, but not so well on the completeness of vision. They possibly dominate a large segment but don’t demonstrate a vision for the future of their industry.
